Who loves a beautiful Christmas tree but doesn’t know where to start with decorating? This was me for many years so I just stuck with our family tree adorned with keepsake ornaments we had collected over the years. I still have this tree but I also like to have a coordinated professional looking tree on display front and center when people walk in our home. Let’s just say both make me very happy for different reasons.
I started this trend of having a coordinated well dressed tree years ago with my first ever King of Christmas tree. I really wanted the flocked look to go with a neutral Christmas theme.
Flocked vs. Natural
Everyone has their preferences on the look they want. I have always had natural trees so I went with the flocked version a few years ago and am obsessed! I had heard great things about King of Christmas trees so I ordered an unlit 7 ft prince flock at a very reasonable price. I didn’t want to spend a ton of money quite yet until I knew I liked it! I loved the change in tree color! The ease of putting a King Of Christmas tree was so wonderful and the flocking shedding was minimal compared to my cheap Walmart trees. This year I got a prelit 8ft prince flocked tree from King of Christmas with 550 warm LED lights. I loved having the lights already on! The new tree has several brightness setting as well. There is a button on the cord (one of those ones you just step on to turn the lights on). You step on it once for full brightness, once more for dimmer brightness, etc.
Decorating Details
Decorating a tree has no instruction booklet, but I find doing things in a certain order helps me. Here is the order I follow:
- Lights (unless you have a pre-lit)
- Ribbon (explain how in a bit)
- Garlands
- Picks
- Coordinated ornaments
- Tree topper
Ribbon
The ribbon is so easy and it totally looks so hard to do! You just cut in smaller pieces and tuck it into the tree.
Here’s a quick video (I find it more helpful to see someone doing it) of how I do the ribbon:

Garland
I just drape in no particular way! LOL! I cut my garland into smaller pieces so I only have to drape a little at a time. If it’s a longer piece I just drape and eyeball it so that it’s evenly dispersed. Here is what I used this year:

Picks
These are a great way to add interest to you tree and give it some dimension. Also helps fill in any bare spots. This year I just used floral stems from Michaels. Here is what I used:

Ornaments
Try and stick with a color theme when it comes to ornaments. It helps give it a more cohesive feel when the entire tree is done. My fav colors (and the ones I used this year and last) are black, red, and white. I have solid colored ornaments and ones with some pattern. I usually start with the biggest ones first and spread those out evenly. I do one group at a time (big buffalo check balls, then red hats next, then wood slices next, etc…). I just do my best to evenly distribute them all. Here are some of my favs from this year:

Tree Topper
Tree toppers don’t have to be the traditional ones. Last year I used some florals and picks around the top of my tree to make a bigger statement. This year I found the cutest buffalo plaid star (really a sign) to put on top. Both were within my color scheme of the tree and were pretty over sized. We like big tree toppers around here!
